1. Maximize Ventilation
Creating a breezy sanctuary inside the van is essential. Here’s how we do it:
Windows and Roof Vents: The first step is as simple as opening up the windows and vents to get the air moving. If you have a built-in or portable fans, they will help up to push out the hot air and draw in the cooler breeze.
2. Use Reflective Sunshades
Sun beating down can turn the van into an oven. We love our views, but keeping the blinds and curtains shut during peak sun hours keeps the inside of the van much cooler. Also put a reflective sunscreen on your windscreen to keep the cab cool.
3. Park Smartly
Where you park can make a huge difference in the heat. Here’s what we look for:
Always aim to park under the cover of trees, beside buildings, or even near larger vehicles to provide shade.
If we’re setting up camp for a few days, we position our van so the side with the largest windows faces away from the sun.
Parking near lakes or rivers not only offers stunning views and automatically makes you feel cooler also a quick swim can be wonderfully refreshing!
4. Cool Down Your Bed
A good night’s sleep is crucial, especially after a day of adventures. Here’s how we keep our sleeping area chill:
Use lightweight breathable bed linen, /cotton and bamboo are good options.
Cooling mattress gel pads are also an option.
5. Consider Portable Cooling Devices
For those extreme heatwaves, here are a couple of gadgets you might be useful:
Portable AC Units: They’re a bit of an investment and require a decent power setup, but certainly worth considering if you plan on travelling to countries where temperatures are known to soar.
Evaporative Coolers: Also known as swamp coolers, they use water to cool down the air and are more suited for dry climates.
Staying cool in your camper van doesn’t have to be a struggle—even without high-tech gadgets. With a bit of planning and these practical tips, you can beat the heat and enjoy your journeys to the fullest.
Keep exploring, stay cool, and as always, safe travels!
